Quality for a Life in the Open Air

Castors not only have to hold their ground in closed rooms – their quality should also defy outside influences. Castors that are used the whole year in the open air are subjected to external influences in relation to adverse weather and extreme temperatures. A combination of temperature and humidity can have a particularly bad effect.

Colson makes provisions for this – through surface improvements to the sheet steel components. The parts are for example galvanised, chrome-plated or powder coated. For use in particularly harsh environments we recommend rust-free castors, manufactured from stainless steel.

Temperature resistance must be assessed individually for each application. It is dependent upon many varied factors. In the selection process first we investigate the high and low temperature resistance. The final selection of castors is then shaped by influencing factors such as the duration of effect of the temperature, stresses, various environmental influences and ground conditions.

In addition to the environmental influences, the degree to which the castors are washable also has increasing importance. For cleaning in autoclaves or any with high pressure cleaning we recommend corrosion-protected castors, made of stainless steel, chrome-plated steel and high-quality plastics.

Product Service Information

Whilst every care is taken to ensure that castors reach our customers in good condition, substantial improvements in length of service can be achieved by proper maintenance. The following points require regular attention.

Castors

Regularly examine the swivel assembly to check if excessive play exists due to wear. If the assembly is loose it may be advisable to replace the swivel assembly or the entire castor. If the castor is fitted with a king pin nut, ensure it is tight. If the castor does not rotate properly check for dirt or other foreign material blocking the raceway. Fixed horns should be checked to ensure they are not bent.

Wheels

Check wheels for visible points of wear. Flat spots may indicate that fibrous materials are causing the wheel to bind. Threadguards will delay build-up of such materials. After checking the wheel, ensure the axle nut is properly tightened.

Lubrication

Lubricate wheel and swivel bearings regularly to increase life. Attention to points of friction is helpful and will increase rolling ease. If the castor is washed frequently particular attention should be paid to lubrication after each wash, particularly with unsealed castors.

Floor Conditions

Rough uneven floors often go unnoticed but they cause severe overloading in some cases simply because one wheel leaves the ground and the load is thrust upon the remainder. Impact loads due to kerbs and holes in the floor also cause problems.
